Despite Rising Inflation and Labor Costs, Enjoy A Custom Unique Outdoor BBQ

Unless you’ve been living in a cave on the edge of the world for the past year, you’ve probably noticed the rising costs of goods and services over the last year. This is especially noticeable in the construction industry, where, according to the National Association of Homebuilders, construction costs are up 19% so far this year and 36% since March 2020. Appliance, furnishings, and décor are also up 8% year over year.

To add insult to injury, average hourly wages rose by 6.3% since last year, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. These earnings may continue to rise by 3% to 6% this year without an end in sight. Because of this, affordable, trustworthy, competent carpenters, handymen, and tradesman — those who will get the job done right with the right materials the first time — are in short supply. Having someone build even the simplest of barbecue islands could cost upwards of $50,000.

With all that said, you may be thinking that building your dream barbecue island at a cost that won’t end your marriage is just that — a dream. It doesn’t have to be.

Taking initiative to build a unique, custom barbecue island yourself (and paying your good friends with pizza and beer to help) could make that dream a reality. Removing professional labor costs and purchasing lower cost finishing materials at your local hardware store could shave at least 25% off the cost of building your barbecue.

The key is keeping things simple (at least at first). There is nothing wrong with starting out with a nice eight-foot island with a drop-in grill and growing as time goes on. Choose a design that can be easily upgraded and consider more cost-effective countertop, cabinet, and finish materials. You may also have to refrain from adding any electrical or plumbing components (such as a refrigerator or sink) in the initial design, unless of course you are an electrician or plumber, then, have at it!

Whatever your eventual goal may be, DIY BBQ can help you find the perfect barbecue island. Start with our pre-designed islands, which begin at $1,150 (frame only), then give us a call and create that custom dream at a time when saving money is incredibly hard to do.
